Documentary Movie: The Wrecking Crew

spector4 300x120 Documentary Movie: The Wrecking Crew Here’s one for you: What do Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Sonny and Cher, The Byrds, The Righteous Brothers, and The Beach Boys have in common? …the same band.

Believe it or not, the session guys known as “The Wrecking Crew” played the music on so many records that you know and love, and many times unbeknownst to the listener. I was even shocked to find out how involved they were in one of my favorite records, The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”.

Featured all over the country and in 8 film festivals, the new documentary “The Wrecking Crew” is screening in Los Angeles at DocuWeek daily from August 22nd – August 28th.

From Rolling Stone: “A new documentary tells the story of the Wrecking Crew, a collective of Los Angeles musicians who played on hits by the Righteous Brothers, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and many others. Directed by Denny Tedesco, son of the late guitarist Tommy Tedesco, The Wrecking Crew features interviews with Brian Wilson, Cher, Roger McGuinn, and famed Crew members like Bassist Carol Kaye and drummer Hal Blaine. “These guys were chameleons,” Tedesco says. “They went from Phil Spector to Nancy Sinatra to the Beach Boys. They always had to sound like somebody else.”

  1.

This movie is an important cultural document, as these musicians had enormous impact on 20th century pop culture. Those hit songs they helped create are played around the world, every day. Could there ever be a better guitar line up: Barney Kessel, Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell, Howard Roberts, and Billy Strange? Good Lord!

  2.

Agreed. The more I’m learning about “The Wrecking Crew”, the more I become amazed that more people aren’t aware of their work.
