johnbonham.jpgMixing and recording are 20% of the equation, performance is 80%. I’m pretty sure these sessions were done with only 3 or 4 mics, I’ll look into it. For aspiring drummers, listen to how the bass drum dynamics and sound change depending on the hit, creating a repeating pattern. Also, notice the slight tempo changes and how they help create an enormous groove - further proof that drum editing can be bad…

Drum outtakes from Led Zeppelin’s “In Through The Out Door”, November-December 1978. Recorded at Polar Recording Studios.

Please enjoy these outtakes with respect for their creators and their intentions. So please don’t make a shitty rap song out of them.

[EDIT: July 1st, 2008] It’s occurred to me that a bunch of other sites have been directly linking to the zip file. I hate to do this, but I’ve password protected it to control downloads. However, I’d be more than happy to provide the password - just contact me directly and I’ll painlessly hook you up with the info. -C

Hi. These are very interesting, and a joy to listen to. How did you come by all of these outtakes?

An engineer friend of mine brought by a copy. My assistant also told me that these are floating around the net as well.

These are sweet! What killer sounds and just awesome strokes.

Yeah, much JB’s talent lies within his timing and groove. It drags in spots and pushes in others, yet sounds right. As a drummer myself, I’d say he’s one of my biggest influences. Thanks to both of you for commenting!
