I'm no musician but I have to say that having limitations forces you to create your own options and potentially be able to make some lovely pieces.

What I can cobble together from bass, synths, drums, etc., is enough for people to say "you should turn professional". However, as I keep saying to them, take away the engineering and computer composition and you're left with bare tracks which show up a real lack of live performance capability.

I know what the pioneers mean when they say they made up the rules as they went, as I do too from the other direction.

I couldn't agree more. Although certain aspects of Pro Tools are a godsend on some level, I've also seen it completely destroy the songwriting process. Having limitless options can be a huge stumbling block for some people.

Crazy. The process for recording to tape was a lot less flexible than it is now with computers, Pro Tools etc. The limitations helped produce some great music though.
