Pick Only Two: Good, Fast, Cheap (The Project Triangle)

A friend of mine recently introduced me to the idea of the “project triangle” as it applies to making albums, and it occurred to me that it perfectly illustrates a concept that I’m constantly trying to explain to my clients and musician friends.

You Can Pick Only Two

“Fast” represents the time it takes to make your record, “Good” represents the final quality of your record, and “Cheap” represents the total cost of making your record. The points on the triangle are in constant conflict with each other, and to obtain any two points the third must be sacrificed.

In terms of making albums, it plays out like this:

YOU CAN ONLY PICK TWO.

It’s wise to be mindful of this concept as it helps with establishing realistic goals and expectations. This model also works for all kinds of other projects such as designing websites, making movies, etc.

The joke is OLD. I mean, the newest reference to it in the media was Beavis and Butthead, and if you’re into quoting Beavis and Butthead you should really consider paying attention to some of the newer iconic retard parodies of the last decade.
People may assume you’re wearing Dockers.
People may assume you’re wearing shorts and/or sandals.
It’s just flatly inappropriate unless someone around you is currently doing a keg-stand.
It will vastly decrease your chances of getting laid.
The bartenders will think you’re a poor tipper.
It gives the person standing next you permission to slap you.
You’ve just announced to the crowd that you’re not a musician, you have no creative talent, and that you’re very insecure with yourself when naked.

Unbeknownst to many recording professionals, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (the organization behind the Grammy Awards) created a special “Wing” for recording professionals. The Producers & Engineers Wing specializes in all kinds of important stuff relating to recording and record production, not to mention that members also have the opportunity to vote on the upcoming awards.

Although it’s too late to cast a vote for this year’s awards, I really recommend spending a moment on their website to see if you meet the “voting member” eligibility requirements. If you do, I highly recommend becoming a member. Together we can fight the good fight against Grammys going to s*** artists…

If I could buy any console to work on at the moment, this would be the one. I haven’t heard much talk about the Duality, but I’m guessing it’s because the extreme cost of owning an SSL prohibits just about everyone I know from pretty much looking at the thing. At a STARTING PRICE OF $240,000 (you read that right), it’s unlikely I’ll be buying one anytime soon.

Aspen Pittman founded Groove Tubes in 1979, and now after almost 30 years in business, he and the rest of the factory crew are closing down shop. After getting involved with the company about 10 years ago, Fender is now taking over the biz, and Groove Tubes is no more.

Apparently there are some great deals to be had on stuff in the factory. If you live in LA, I bet it’s worth a trip over to the factory.

This is just a preliminary announcement to let ya’ll know we’re planning a recording / mixing workshop for Saturday, December 20th here in San Diego. The workshop will span the entire day, and will cover the fundamentals of recording live instruments, vocalists and sounds in a real world setting.

It’ll be a goldmine of information and experience for aspiring musicians, recording engineers, and recording enthusiasts. Again, we’re still working out the details, but if you’re interested please let me know as I’m putting together a list of people already, and space is limited!

Admittedly I’m not as big of a gear head these days as I once was, but I do still geek out a bit on new Pro Tools features.

It’s been some time since Digidesign released any major hardware and software upgrades, and I’d be willing to bet we could easily see Pro Tools 8 coming in early October at AES. I’m not entirely sure how things will be improved, but I’d imagine multi-processor support will be worked on a bit, as well as a general push towards integrating more virtual instruments.

Anybody have any thoughts or guesses on what to expect? Rumors?

Here’s one for you: What do Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Sonny and Cher, The Byrds, The Righteous Brothers, and The Beach Boys have in common? …the same band.

Believe it or not, the session guys known as “The Wrecking Crew” played the music on so many records that you know and love, and many times unbeknownst to the listener. I was even shocked to find out how involved they were in one of my favorite records, The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”.

Featured all over the country and in 8 film festivals, the new documentary “The Wrecking Crew” is screening in Los Angeles at DocuWeek daily from August 22nd -- August 28th.

At only 38 years of age, mega-talented Producer, Engineer and Mixer Jerry Finn was taken off of life support today. He suffered a massive brain hemorrhage approximately one month ago. Although he has been removed from life support and is in declining health, his family understandably wishes that everyone know he is resting comfortably.

A true talent and great person, Jerry is quite well known for his work, and considered to be one of the leaders in our field.

[Update: I'm sad to say that on August 21st, Jerry passed away. He will be missed.]

At 46, the Sax player from Dave Matthews Band passed away on Tuesday from complications extending from an accident with an ATV.

Yep, Phil’s settlement was $46.5 million to be exact. Even worse, it was his 3rd wife. His last wife got him for $32 million – and he bailed on her via a fax! He should’ve married Susudio.

Apparently, an article posted in the Australasian Psychiatry journal says that teens into Metal are big on unprotected sex, shoplifting, etc.

How awesome.

Also, people who dance indulge in more drug use, Rap fans are into theft and violence, Jazz fans usually settle down as “loners” and Pop music lovers struggle with “peer-acceptance”.

The article does make the distinction that the style of music isn’t the cause, but people with these personality traits gravitate towards the styles.

About 24 hours after I wrote my first ever post on a plugin for Pro Tools (from Steven Massey), the guy had to go and release a new one.

I’ve been waiting for a De-Esser with a Wet/Dry know – thanks Steven! In all honesty, I haven’t checked it out yet, so there’s always the possibility it sucks, but I HIGHLY doubt it based on my experience with his other stuff. It’s also available for HD rigs in TDM form.

If anyone gets the chance to try it, let me know what you think.

For the love of all that is holy and good, please DO NOT EQ during the recording process unless you really know what you’re doing – there’s no point in it. The only friends that I know that do it are experienced.

1. If you aren’t absolutely 101% positive that the EQ move you just made is helping the situation – DO NOT DO IT DURING THE RECORDING PROCESS, and save it for the mix when it’s not permanent. Why paint yourself into a corner?

2. If you’re new to the whole process of EQ, there’s no reason out of the gate that you should be making moves greater than +/- 3db. If you cant get it right with only 3 decibels, then you need to switch mics, instruments, amps, amp settings, cymbals or mic placement. TRUST ME, an EQ is NOT where you’re going to find what you’re looking for.

Sorry for the rant, but I’ve been fighting bad equalization all day. It’s a shame as the song is great and the musicianship is excellent, but because someone tried to do too much with their EQ, they’ve permanently tweaked the tone of the whole damn thing.

Stay tuned, I’m sure someone will piss me off with bad compression. I think Steve Albini once said bad compression “makes everything sound like a beer commercial.”

Pro Tools Plugins: Sonalksis

Sonalksis, based out of Liverpool, England, happens to be one of the smallest yet most intriguing companies currently developing plugins. Other than Sony’s Oxford line of EQs and compressors, there are few plugins that I’ve found over the last few years that have inspired me outside of the current line of emulations and clones.

The SV-315 mk2 compressor, as much as I almost hate to say it, has been a godsend compressor that has beat out my outboard SSL buss compressor on several occasions. Between that and the surprisingly useful and unique TBK3 compressor, I find their stuff innovative and effective beyond many of the newer stuff from some of the major developers.

Please note I’m not endorsed or affiliated with these guys – I was just inspired by my session today to share with ya’ll my current love of these plugins. In my opinion, the future of audio plugin design for Pro Tools and any other platform needs to be forward thinking. Emulating outboard gear has it’s place, but the next revolution lies within new and creative designs. There’s a difference between building upon past designs and re-hashing them in digital form.

I don’t often pimp gear or endorse companies, but after meeting plugin designer Steven Massey a bit back I’ve decided the guy deserves a bit of a pat on the back. First of all, he’s a solid dude. Secondly, his plugins for Pro Tools are great – and cheap!

If you’re into mixing or working on your own stuff at home, please take a minute to check out his stuff. I personally love the THC for distortion, and have yet to find something I like better on bass. I also use the CT4. Chances are I’d use the other stuff as well if I owned it, but I can’t speak for it as I haven’t tried it…

It’s days like this I wish I lived in Seattle, as the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival was this past weekend. I’m super happy they’re still alive and ticking. Here was the line-up:
